A Short Walk With Frau B. May 2, 2010

“Short” being relative; eight miles round trip sounded like a stroll to us two old mountaineers, but the passing of time made this first excursion of the season a bit of a test for both of us.

We passed, but not without a bit of suffering.  The trail wasn’t steep, but the footing was complicated, requiring total concentration to avoid tweeking my bad ankle.  And the 85-degree day caught us a bit short on water and resulted in dehydration headaches for us both.

The hike took us through an interesting ridge-top ecosystem, including a dwarf pine barrens and some cool stands of birch:

But our destination, Verkeederkill Falls, was well worth the walk, offering up 180 feet of vertigo-inducing splendor:

The worst part of the day was watching The Young Immortals hang their toes over the slippery edge of the void:

This guy was merely “close,” but others were begging evolution to take its course.

Still, it was a beautiful place to pass a hot afternoon:

Thanks, Frau B, for taking me along!
