I know, they’re everywhere, and they shit all over the place.  But here in the Wide Open, they’re just another of the critters wandering about.

A Momma and Children:

By way of Gizmo.

On my way through Northfield MA to Vernon VT, I took Old Vernon Road (not recommended) past a startling number of ponds with pine snags, beaver dams and… geese!

Not that they’re rare, but they had goslings in tow, and I broke out Gizmo and my 2X Tele-Extender III, for a whopping 800mm of lens length.

Here are a couple of the shots I snagged, battling camera shake as I hand-held these shots:

Eight babies (one playing “duck” and Dad, if I read the family right.)

They were determined to get some distance between themselves and me, but I moved slowly and carried a big stick.

More shots from that foggy ride to come.

Looking over my photos of the last few days, I realized I had several animal (or animal-related) shots which might work as one post, so… here goes!

A beaver lodge up in Windsor, taken the day of the big storms (sorry, no beaver today!):

Mallards on a bit of open water nearby:

While we’re in a fowl mood, a family of geese in Williamstown:

That one was taken from atop my car, with the wind gusting so hard it very nearly blew me and my tripod off!

Here’s a doe in a field in Charlemont at day’s end:

…and a sweet little guy who plopped onto the hood of my car as I was bulling through low branches on a seldom-traveled old woods road:

Surprised me, I must say!  🙂

And lastly, a digression from the “wildlife” theme but kind of a nice photo without another place to be, here’s a horse in a pasture of buttercups in Williamstown:

It sometimes seems that image-worthy scenes present themselves in thematic clusters, but I suppose it’s more a mater of keying into one aspect of my surroundings and going with that flow.

Anyway, that’s all for now.

And The Fog Rolled In. April 25, 2011

It rained all day today, not hard, but enough to keep the views at bay and my camera in its case.

Then, approaching home, it lightened up a bit and as I drove along the Deerfield river a thick fog came rolling down the valley.  I’d been waiting for a fog with a venue in mind for a photograph, so I ducked into the East Charlemont boat ramp to turn around, and stumbled onto a pair of geese gliding silently out of view:

I hustled down to Gardner Falls, actually a dam downstream from the village of Shelburne falls; I wanted to set up below the dam, not much above the upstream water level, and see what that looked like in fog.  As the fog bank rounded the bend like the ghost of a great snake, it looked like this:

This was just a “test shot,” but this place has potential; I can see getting there before sunrise to catch sky reflections, or keeping an eye on it when the Autumn colors come in.

At any rate, I’ll certainly be back.

A flotilla of fluffy fledgelings guarded by a goose and gander:

Taken from the shore of Bog Pond up in Savoy.

Enjoy!  🙂

Like so:

duck duck geese

…reading right to left, that is.  Seems the ducks are shyer than the geese, even the babies, and motored off as soon as I approached.

Love the gosletts, though.
