An Update, While I Can. October 29, 2011

Well, our Odd Year continues, with snow in October.  Not that we never had that before, but it’s pretty rare – the last significant October snowfall I recall was back in 1987, when our first daughter was two months old.  Pagan Sphinx and I were living in Great Barrington, MA when a whopper Nor’Easter hit, dropping thousands of trees which still had their leaves, and as many pines which couldn’t rely on the stability afforded by frozen ground.  We had something like ten days without power, no heat or refrigeration or running water, and no way to get anywhere – the roads were mazes of downed trees, live wires and stranded vehicles.  That kinda sucked, though we all survived it.

And here we go again.  Overnight our local area is expecting something like a foot of wet, heavy snow, and we still have plenty of trees with their leaves on.  Power outages are spreading as I type this, so I’ll keep it succinct in case I lose power.  We have about ten inches in the driveway, the roads are nearly impassable, and my sweetie Susan and her cats have already lost power.  This has the potential to get ugly.

This past Thursday afternoon and evening fired a warning shot across our collective bows, with a smaller storm to get us prepared for this larger one (you should have seen the lines at the tire stores!)  And I got a few shots of it.

Here’s your typical Autumn maple leaf:

…in an atypical setting:

(different leaves, same shoot)

…in an unusual juxtaposition of autumn and winter:

The road in the valley cleft down left of center is Route 2, the Mohawk Trail, my current job site.  It’s a real mess, closed since Irene blew through, and is a hub of activity, with many work crews aiming at getting this stretch of road open before winter.

And no, we weren’t counting on this series of storms, so we may be set back a bit in our efforts, but we’ll make it happen.

My next post (if I don’t lose power and internet access) will be of the mayhem wrought by Saturday night’s Big Snow.  It’ll be pretty, if the predicted winds lag significantly behind sunrise.  Otherwise, it will be only interesting, and a good bit sloppy.

Photos tomorrow, In Sh’Allah.

…a crystal stream tumbles through a limestone gorge:

The cool waters run emerald against the pale tan of the geologic jumble:

If one dares to follow the rushing waters upward between the towering walls, one finds an emerald font tucked in the depths of a mysterious narrows:

Yes, this untrodden place is here in the Berkshires, despite its resemblance to the slot canyons of the Southwest:

On my next visit I’ll come better prepared to access and photograph this very cool place.  Until then, this is what we’ve got.

It’s Winter! December 30, 2010

Like most of the Northeast, we’re having a bit of winter here in The Berks.  It’s pretty up in the hills, with scenes like this one, a late afternoon shot of a shoulder of Spruce Hill up in Florida:

We didn’t get as much here as many nearby areas did, but the roads were nonetheless slick with blowing snow for a couple of days, and the streams descending through hushed cascades offered me an opportunity to break out Gizmo for a few close-ups:

…and:

That last one was taken beneath a heavy overcast; I really liked the textures and palette which came through.

Saturday turned into a pretty nice day, with thin clouds interspersed with breaks of sun.  I left my sunrise shoot in Shelburne Falls and headed up river to enjoy the nascent winter scenery.

The Chickley river in West Charlemont was looking pristine, with its ice hummocks steeped in deep-green waters:

Its tributaries, cascading over ledge drops, built ice castles along the way:

I really dig the forms ice takes as streams plunge and burble their way toward the sea.

We have a lot of that around here, with our abundance of topographical relief, and our innumerable rivers and streams.  Be patient with me, as I’m in love with this stuff and bound to get repetitive as the winter rolls on.

Here’s a quickie before I hit the hay, Sunday night’s full moonrise over my town in the Berkshires:

I know it’s a lot like other moon pics I’ve posted, but hey, we only have one moon!

Hope you enjoy it despite the (monthly) repetition.   😉

…Winter, that is.

Last night the wind blew and the sleet and freezing rain pelted the house; this morning’s ride over the mountain to work was slow and nerve-wracking, as I’m waiting ’till after my December auto inspection to put my studded snows on.

Still, I’m a big fan of winter.  I’m amazed by it, by the aesthetics of shimmering ice, of the remnants of Autumn entombed in sparkling light, of steely skies swirling over a landscape lit by the long, low rays of a cold sun.

I broke out Elliot to snag this shot on the way home:

I’m always struck by that deep-blue-horizon thing which happens as a storm recedes eastward.

I’ll apologize ahead of time for boring you all to tears with this stuff, but I just can’t get enough of it, and Lord knows I need the practice !  😉

This evening, with a not-quite-sunset threatening but not materializing:

Behind it are the elegant concrete arches of the Bridge of Flowers.

This view has a postcard-like feel to me, and inspires me to look for similar “feels.”

G’night now.

A night of off-and-on rain slides slowly toward the twilight of morning.  As the darkness gives way to light, heavy river fogs rise wraith-like from the valleys, wreathing the hills in gray mists.

You force yourself to roll out of bed, dress, swill a cup of yesterday’s coffee and stumble out to the car, intent on getting above the morning miasma, hoping to find a sunrise.

The road climbs and winds through narrow valleys, their walls obscured by drifting mists, ’till at last the mists thin and you break free into the space between the fogs of Mother Earth and the clouds of Father Sky, just in time to see them bow down to The Source, The Reason, The Sun:

So begins another day in the Berkshire Hills of Western Massachusetts.

Thank you, Mother Earth.  Thank you, Father Sky.  Thank you, Sun.

We here in The Hills take our daily sights for granted, so frequently unaware of their specialness.

Photography has been a call for me to reexamine that position, looking hard at scenes I might otherwise obliviously blow past.

Like this one, of a roadside VFW in Clarksburgh, MA:

I threw a bit of weight around with Elliot, shifting the perspective and the mass upward to approximate this building’s forceful presence in its humble neighborhood, and its humility relative to its old oak neighbor.

I hope you like it.

A few images from yesterday’s mind-cleansing, soul-nurturing walk in the hills and dales of the Northern Berkshires:

I like this time of year, with its clear, bracing air.
