It rained on the way home from work today. I paddled eastward over the hills through darkly photogenic fogs, but it was coming down too hard to get out and shoot.
I kept going till I was nearly home, then took advantage of a lightening in the gloom to snap this shot of the Chickley river along Route 8A:
It was an atmospheric scene, but my kit was getting wet pretty quickly, so I beat it.
Wow, beautiful picture and important because it’s one of the last pictures before Hurricane Irene did a number on the Chickley River (August 28, 2011). Love your photographs, they are really nice.
Pamela, welcome! Great to “meet” a local viewer.
This particular stretch of the river, while low down in its course, was mostly spared the ravages so evident elsewhere, so will probably show up again as the seasons change.
It blew my mind to see the “repair job” your town boss did, turning the whole river into a virtual canal. Heart breaking, if you ask me, and subject to yearly devastation due to the lack of obstructions left in the river bed, not to mention the total obliteration of habitat. I’m amazed that the State let that happen.
Oh well, perhaps in a generation Mother will take it back. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed for the integrity of Route 8A. I think it’s gonna need it!
