Saw him live once, probably in the 80’s, in a huge auditorium. And even though I didn’t have a close-in seat, he moved me to laughter and tears. Perhaps the most moving performance I’ve ever see, and I’ve seen more than my share.
That man spoke the Common Language – the language of being human.
I worked with him twice, once in the early 90’s in Manchester NH at a lovely little vaudeville house struggling as they all do, and once at the Calvin in Noho in probably spring of 2001 or so. Very different shows, but what a lovely man. In Manchester, my boyfriend of the time was in the audience, and when we met Marceau at the stage door, without reservation he reached out and touched my boyfriend’s long sideburns like a child. At the Calvin show, I had invited my partner’s family to come and they did: the presenter had not done the best of jobs promoting this world treasure so there were some seats available. Together we shared a world class experience. It has been my life’s priviledge to work with such an artist. He is in peace, but certainly not resting. Bon Voyage, Monsieur Marceau!
Beautiful, Miz Lu. It’s cool to hear of these personal contacts with the myths and legends of my life. But then, you’ve got many of those tales to tell, and I always enjoy them!
Stopped be one evening this past weekend, but you were out. We’ve got to start meeting like this! 😆
(*nods head, wipes tears from face*)
odd how that affected me.
